Why you should check your oil and water each time you top up your fuel

We recommend that everybody checks the oil and water in their cars as regularly as possible.

A simple check can be completed in less than two minutes as you wait for the pump to deliver your petrol each time you top up.

Over the years, we have heard many sad stories about people who have destroyed their cars by not paying close attention to these two important ingredients. If your car does not have enough water/engine coolant, it is at serious risk of over-heating and eventually your engine will lose compression and stop working. If this happens, it means you'll need a new engine or new car.

We've outlined below the three key things you should check while waiting at the pump.

1. The windscreen washer water. This is usually found at the front of the engine bay and has a symbol of a windscreen being wiped with a wiper blade - it's okay to fill this to the top.

2. The engine coolant/water. This tank looks similar to the cleaning water and is usually close by. It typically says coolant. Warning: never fill this above the max line as it may cause the lid to pop off once the engine is warm and you will soon lose all your water.

3. Oil. The oil dip stick can usually be found close to the front and centre of the engine bay. In newer cars, the top of the stick is usually yellow. It's best to check the oil level when your car is reasonably cool. Make sure you wipe the dip stick clean and re-dip it to get an accurate reading. If it is low, you can top up at a petrol station. If it is dirty or jet black, it may be time for a service - we can arrange this for you.
